Gauteng police have launched a manhunt for a group of suspects linked to a cash-in-transit (CIT) heist that occurred near the Mandela Sports Complex in Hammanskraal on Wednesday.

Police said a group of armed suspects in a silver Mercedes Benz rammed into the cash van along Hamman road in Hammanskraal from the N1 freeway. before blowing it up.

According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk, the suspects rammed into the cash van.

“The driver of a cash van and his two crew members were driving along Hamman road in Hammanskraal from the N1 freeway when they were intercepted by a group of armed suspects who rammed into the cash van with a silver Mercedes Benz C180.

“The suspects fired gunshots at the guards and then blew up the cash van before they fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money. They (suspects) then reportedly fled the scene in a white Ford Ranger,” she said.

Van Wyk mentioned that two weeks ago, police foiled a planned CIT heist in Dobsonville and recovered three vehicles used during the commission of the crime.

An R5 and three AK47 assault rifles; two suspects were fatally wounded during this incident.

Col van Wyk warned community members not to find themselves on the wrong side of the law by helping themselves to money lying around or tampering with active crime scenes.

She added; “Anyone that has information that may assist with the investigation is urged to contact their nearest police station.”
