Suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi has been arrested by the SAPS Madlanga Task Team in Gauteng.

The team has been established to investigate prima facie evidence of wrongdoing involving people identified in the Madlanga Commission’s interim report.

The arrest relates to ongoing investigations into alleged misconduct and irregular activities linked to Mkhwanazi’s office, who is charged with fraud, corruption, and obstructing justice.

He has been implicated in the death of Emmanuel Mbense in 2022 and accused of instructing the disposal of the body and concealing the involvement of EMPD officers.

He has denied the claims and distanced himself from the murder.

Additionally, evidence presented at the Madlanga Commission linked him to an operation associated with the alleged theft of valuable stones in Johannesburg.

In a statement issued, police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed that the 50-year-old official was arrested at his home on Saturday morning.

Corruption within Ekurhuleni

“The Task Team is still searching for other suspects linked to the case. These arrests emanate from an ongoing investigation into corruption within the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD). No further comment will be provided on the merits of the case at this stage,” the statement read.

Mkhwanazi is expected to appear before the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, April 20.
