Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Faith Mazibuko, unveiled a newly built 35-bed male mental healthcare unit at Sebokeng Regional Hospital on Monday.

Additionally, she officially reopened three refurbished wards at Kopanong District Hospital, contributing to the overall improvement of mental health facilities in the area.
The department announced that this initiative aims to enhance mental healthcare services and elevate the quality of patient care in the Sedibeng region, addressing the critical need for improved mental health support in the area.
“The infrastructure upgrades form part of the department’s ongoing investment in healthcare facilities to improve access to care, strengthen service delivery and create safe, dignified and patient-centred environments for patients and healthcare workers.
“As the principal public healthcare facilities in the Sedibeng region, Kopanong District Hospital and Sebokeng Regional Hospital are essential providers of medical services.
“They cater to the health needs of a large number of residents who depend on the public health system, highlighting their crucial role in the community’s overall healthcare infrastructure.
“These hospitals are vital to supporting the growing populations in their respective areas by offering accessible and necessary healthcare services,” said Steve Mabona, the departmental spokesperson.
According to Mabona, the newly constructed male mental health care unit marks a significant investment in expanding specialised mental healthcare services in the district.
He continued, “The 35-bed capacity will improve access to inpatient mental healthcare services and help the department respond to the growing demand for specialised psychiatric care in the region.
Outcomes for mental health
“The ward has been designed to provide a safe, secure and therapeutic environment that promotes rehabilitation, recovery and improved health outcomes for mental healthcare users while supporting the delivery of quality specialised mental healthcare services closer to communities.”
At Kopanong District Hospital, the MEC officially reopened Ward 1, a 30-bed female psychiatric ward; Ward 2, a 24-bed admission ward; and Ward 12, a 30-bed paediatric ward following extensive refurbishment and infrastructure improvements.
Mabona stated that these upgrades have improved the quality of the care, patient safety and functionality of the facility.
“The upgraded paediatric ward offers a child-friendly environment that promotes healing and well-being, while improvements to the female mental healthcare unit strengthen specialised mental healthcare services through enhanced patient dignity, safety and therapeutic care.

“The refurbished admission ward will also contribute to a more efficient patient journey from admission through to treatment and discharge,” he added.
During the event, MEC Mazibuko highlighted that the recent upgrades to public healthcare facilities reflect the government’s dedication to addressing the healthcare needs of expanding communities.
She emphasised that healthcare facilities must provide a comprehensive range of specialised services, including mental healthcare
and dedicated support centres for victims of abuse, to ensure that communities have access to integrated and patient-centred care.
