Rising music star MTK has collaborated with the legendary maskandi group Shwi Mantombazane to release a new single.

This emotionally charged track combines traditional maskandi rhythms with contemporary afro sounds, marking a fusion of genres that highlights both the cultural heritage and modern elements of music.
Released under Rootkey Entertainment and produced by DJ Teddy, Ukuphila Nawe tells a deeply personal story of pain, perseverance and triumph.
The track reflects MTK’s difficult upbringing and his journey from homelessness and hardship to finding healing and purpose through music.
MTK, whose real name is Thandanani Xaba, born in Msinga, KwaZulu-Natal, endured years of abuse and rejection before being forced out of his home at the age of 12.
Despite these challenges, MTK found solace in Maskandi music and traditional storytelling. Abused and repeatedly beaten by his stepfather, who falsely accused him of theft and rejected him for not fitting in.
Alone and vulnerable, he faced hunger, isolation, and uncertainty—experiences that would later shape both his music and his identity as an artist. Despite the challenges, MTK found comfort in the sounds of maskandi music and traditional storytelling.
Yet in the midst of that darkness, music became his refuge and his rebellion. The sounds of home, traditional rhythms and stories passed through generations gave him peace when nothing else could.
However, what initially began as a means of escape soon evolved into a deeply rooted purpose for him.
“Music gave me peace when life became difficult. Over time, it became more than an escape—it became my voice and my future,” he reckoned.
For the young artist, collaborating with Shwi Mantombazane signifies a significant and transformative full-circle moment in their career, embodying a blend of inspiration and artistic growth.
He said, “These are artists I grew up listening to. Working with them is humbling and inspiring. It also proves that music can bring different generations together.”
Single combines MTK’s influence
The single combines MTK’s contemporary afro influence with the authentic maskandi sound that made Shwi Mantombazane a household name across South Africa.
The result is a heartfelt anthem rooted in culture while embracing a fresh, modern direction. He said working with [Shwi Mantombazane], the duo came naturally because they’ve always respected each other’s work.
“The collaboration started through conversations about creating something powerful that would connect different generations of music lovers. Once we got into the studio, the chemistry was real and everything flowed naturally.”
According to Shwi Mantombazane, the collaboration felt natural from the beginning.
“MTK is the real deal. He came from pain and street survival, yet his spirit remains strong. This song represents perseverance, culture and hope. The future of our music is in good hands,” explained the group.

“Working with him on this song felt right, old Maskandi voice meeting the new generation,” added Shwi Mantombazane.
He believes his journey will serve as a source of inspiration for young individuals who are confronting challenging life situations.
MTK concluded by emphasizing that one’s background does not determine future potential, suggesting that pain can transform into strength if harnessed effectively.
Together with Shwi Mantombazane, they deliver more than just a song—they offer a story of resilience, healing and cultural pride that is likely to resonate with audiences across generations.
