At least seven people died during an accident involving two vehicles a white Toyota Quantum minibus taxi and a grey Ford Ranger bakkie on Comaro Road, Bassonia on Wednesday.
According to metro police spokesperson, Superintendent Xolani Fihla, JMPD together with Gauteng Provincial Traffic, the South African Police Services crash investigation unit, and emergency services, responded to a tragic road accident that occurred at 07:40.
“It’s alleged that the Toyota Quantum’s brakes failed while travelling downhill on Comaro Road. The driver reportedly lost control, resulting in the taxi colliding with a street lamp pole before crashing into a tree.
“Sadly, seven passengers, five females and two males, aged between thirty and forty-five years, lost their lives at the scene.Â
Taxi’s body parts dislodged during accident
“The impact of the collision caused the taxi’s body parts to dislodge and strike a bakkie travelling in the opposite direction, damaging its windscreen,” he explained.
Fihla stated that the driver of the bakkie escaped without injury.

He added; “Seven other passengers, along with the taxi driver, sustained serious injuries and were transported to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Diepkloof, Soweto, for urgent medical treatment.
“A case of culpable homicide will be opened with SAPS to determine the exact cause of the accident.”
