A 40-year-old street hawker was fatally knocked by a minibus taxi in the Tembisa area on Wednesday afternoon.

According to Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department media liaison officer Marie Mashishi, the Tembisa precinct officers attend to an accident in the Phomolong section where a male street hawker was fatally knocked down.
“Members quickly responded to the location on Andrew Mapheto drive near Birch Acres Mall. On arrival the officers found the male victim lying motionless on the road. The paramedics were called and certified him dead on the scene.
“It is alleged that the deceased was a street hawker who sold items at the traffic lights such as steel wool, caps, socks, and cellphone chargers when he was struck by a white Toyota Quantum minibus taxi.

The 30-year-old male taxi driver who was alone during the accident was travelling from Marlboro to Kempton Park and sustained no injuries.
“A case of culpable homicide was opened at Rabasotho Police station although no arrests have been made. The investigations are ongoing,” she said.
