The ceremony will be held at the Mosaiek Church in Johannesburg.

Among those in attendance will include the parliament portfolio committee on basic education.

According to the committee, it is common practice they attend the event as part of the oversight process over the executive and as a way to encourage learners that are now entering a new phase of their educational journey.

Committee chairperson Joy Maimela said the event represents the culmination of over 12 years of hard work within the schooling system and provides stakeholders the opportunity to reflect on where the system stands, its shortcomings, and areas of strength

She added that while the focus on the day is on Grade 12 results, reflections should be on the system in its entirety.

Maimela further reiterated the call for families to ensure effective support to all learners as they keenly await the results.

Families urged to support learners ahead of the results

“As we await the results, it is important to highlight that those that are not successful should not lose hope. It is important for families to offer maximum support to learners and encourage them to fight anxiety that can lead to unfortunate incidents,” she expressed.

Meanwhile, the select committee on education, science and creative industries has called on the department to focus on its primary function of school admissions and teaching on the first day of schools reopening.

South African schools will open this week for the first term of the year. This coincides with the release of the 2024 matric results.

Committee chairperson Makhi Feni highlighted as unfortunate reports that Grade 12 learners paid a fee to view results.

This comes after reports alleging the selling of matric results even before the department has officially released them, where many students were able to get their results via email – days before the official release.

He continued; “The issue around paying a fee to view results is another form of extortion and should not be entertained. The first day of school is about admission, registration and allocation of stationery as per the requirements of the curriculum.

Feni stated that on behalf of the committee, they trust that minister Gwarube and her team will ensure the reopening of schools runs smoothly.
