Gauteng Human Settlements MEC, Tasneem Motara, will be putting together brick and mortar to build homes for vulnerable families in Orange Farm, as part of the international Nelson Mandela Day commemoration.

Nelson Mandela International Day was launched in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s birthday on 18 July 2009 via unanimous decision of the UN General Assembly.

According to the Nelson Mandela Foundation its focus on this day is work on its priority social justice areas – early childhood development, food security and just cities.

“The Mandela Day campaign is a celebration of our collective power to create a global movement for good and make a positive impact on the world,” the Foundation said.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the department of human settlements said it will be working together with Habitat for Humanity South Africa (HFHSA), the Nelson Mandela Foundation, South Africa Broadcasting Corporation, Industrial Development Corporation, Nedbank, Teleperformance, SA SDI Alliance and Proctor & Gamble in building houses for needy families.

Amongst the dignitaries who will be joining the MEC includes HFHSA National Director Daphney Ngoasheng and Ward Councillor Makhosazana Ndlela.
