Home Affairs minister Dr. Leon Schreiber has announced the immediate dismissal of seven officials from the department.

This decision follows the completion of disciplinary proceedings regarding multiple misconduct cases.

Another 16 suspensions have been implemented as part of ongoing disciplinary actions related to the findings from the interim investigation report by the Special Investigation Unit (SIU).

These recent dismissals have raised the total number of officials removed since the establishment of the Government of National Unity in July 2024 to 63, according to the minister.

“This forms part of the department’s ongoing crackdown on corruption, maladministration, and unethical conduct, in close cooperation with the SIU and other law enforcement agencies.

“Since July 2024, a total of 95 misconduct cases have been initiated for various irregularities, of which 75 have already been finalised.

“This reflects the department’s intensified and consistent approach to consequence management, ensuring that all cases are dealt with decisively and without undue delay,” Schreiber stated.

He highlighted the department’s ongoing efforts to enhance internal controls and oversight mechanisms to combat misconduct, resulting in measurable improvements in the integrity of home affairs operations.

Minister Schreiber emphasized the department’s swift handling of disciplinary issues, leading to ongoing dismissals and actions, reflecting a strong commitment to rectifying long-standing issues within home affairs.

He added, “Our zero-tolerance approach does not rely on words; it is demonstrated in ongoing concrete action to rebuild the rule of law in a department that is fundamental to the functioning of our society.

“Our message is clear: we will continue to support officials in home affairs implementing our digital transformation agenda for all, while promptly addressing corruption, fraud, or misconduct.”
