Department of Community Safety in Gauteng has raised concerns over unruly behaviour displayed by one of their Traffic Police Officer which was caught on video.

This comes after the official was filmed involved in an altercation with Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) officers.

On the video which is widely circulated on social media, the officer is in full uniform swearing and making offensive gestures towards a female EMPD officer.

The video captures the officer using derogatory language and making insults and threats related to her pensions.

Sello Maremane, GTP spokesperson insisted that law enforcement officers have the responsibility to prioritise the safety of all road users and conduct themselves in a professional manner while wearing uniform.

“We strongly condemn the use of non-verbal violent language in the video which displays disrespect and infringes on one’s right to integrity.

“The department is aware of the charges laid against the traffic officer by the EMPD and has currently put the matter under investigation so that appropriate action is taken to ensure the integrity and professionalism of law enforcement officials,” he stated.

Furthermore, Maremane added that the department is committed to upholding the highest standards of conduct among its officers and will take all the necessary steps to address any misconduct.

Meanwhile, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) have applauded the EMPD officers for taking a decisive action to initiate a criminal case against the senior official.

“The RTMC unequivocally condemns the rogue behaviour by the Gauteng Traffic Officer, especially during Women’s Month when the country is celebrating the contributions and achievements of women.

“Such unprofessional conduct by a law enforcement officer is both unlawful and unacceptable, and has the potential to undermine the integrity of law enforcement agencies,” the statement read.
