The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng took to the streets of Evaton on Thursday and held a picket outside Levai Mbatha Clinic to raise concerns about cadre deployment and nepotism.

This follows a tender for the construction of a pavement at the clinic which commenced on 4 December 2024 with Mox Trading listed as the service provider, as per reply to questions posed by the DA in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL).
The DA accused ward councillor Sibongile Soxuza, who is the Speaker for Emfuleni of ‘keeping it in the family’ and called on Gauteng department of health MEC, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko to ensure urgent termination of this fishy tender.
Adding that she employed her husband, son, and individuals with family ties or close relationships with the ANC officials in Emfuleni to work on the project, excluding community members in dire need of jobs.
Handing over a memorandum with the party’s concerns to the Clinic management, provincial leader of the official opposition, Solly Msimanga, stressed that the project was awarded without members of the community’s knowledge.
“They didn’t know that people are being employees and raised this issue with us – saying because we are not ANC-card carrying members, are we not eligible to be brought into the project.
Nepotism, a worrying factor
“When we started investigating we found that Speaker of this particular municipality went as far as hiring her husband and the son to be part of the project.
“We are now saying, this is not fair you would have people using the system to benefit themselves and their families while processes are there clearly to be followed in terms of ensuring there is a fair system of employing people.
“We are here today to say it cannot continue to happen, we want the MEC to come and intervene. Is this how public funding is supposed to be used to the benefit of an organisation and its own members, or is it to the benefit of general public,” he asked.
Msimanga warned that the MEC’s failure to intervene will lead them to escalating the matter to the public protector’s office.
The MEC said the appointed subcontractor for the project employed forty-eight local employees.
However, Msimanga poured the response with cold water citing that he doesn’t take Nkomo-Ralehoko’s response to heart.
“The MEC cannot come and tell us that it is an administration glitch, it cannot be, if it is [an administrative glitch] correct it immediately.
“She must recall the people that have been employed and go about the right processes all over again to ensure that people are called and there’s a fair opportunity where they can get an opportunity to be employed.”

Msimanga further boasted that as the president said there is capacity in the DA, things are being done better.
“We offer better opportunities that are open for anybody. That is a fair manner not because people seems to know particular individual that is holding power,” he expressed.
Among those joined Msimanga at the forefront leading the picket included DA Emfuleni North constituency head, Kingsol Chabalala, DA Emfuleni councillors, Dady Mollo and Prudence Hlanyane.
