The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Sedibeng has raised concerns over the rise of killings in Lesedi local municipality where unknown gunmen target prominent activists.
This senseless killing follows the recent killings of Mandla Moqoqo, the forum’s secretary, and Moeketsi Mollo, a tuck-shop owner.
According to police reports, Happy Nyawuza, the Chairperson of the Ratanda Spaza Shops Business Forum and another adult male, were shot by unidentified assailants who fled the scene during load-shedding on Friday evening.
Nyawuza was known as an active community leader who was instrumental in advocating for residents in Ratanda and surrounding areas, reports Mapepeza.
“This is a serious concern as the question remains – who is next, the Red Beret regional chairperson Isaac Khithika asked.
“The killings are condemned in the strongest terms as they tear at the very fabric of society. We are strongly convinced that there are peaceful ways to deal with issues, if any, other than the use of the barrel of a gun,” he remarked.
Khithika called on the community to allow the police to do their work and not cast aspersions.
He added; “While we applaud the work of the local police, we are calling for more police visibility. We are also calling for the local churches to organise a day of prayer. If there is a time to pray for the community, it is now.”
