Parliament has called on law enforcement agencies to probe the kidnapping of United Democratic Movement’s (UDM) deputy president Nqabayomzi Kwankwa.
On Tuesday, the party confirmed that its DP was kidnapped on his way to Cape Town International Airport en-route to the presidential inauguration.
“A ransom of R10,000 was demanded for his safe return. The UDM paid the ransom, and Kwankwa was released,” UDM president Bantu Holomisa said.
Holomisa stated that Kwankwa’s belongings including his vehicle were stolen. However, the car was later found abandoned.
He added; “We’re happy at least that he’s alive, we have saved his life quickly because anything could’ve happened.
“We didn’t want to get involved in delaying paying this amount of money, and the police because this boy I was talking to him because they were using his phone.
“I said to him, ‘can you give us another 10 minutes’. He said, ‘if you delay you will find him in a mortuary’.”
Police sources involved in the investigation suggested that the kidnappers might not have known Kwankwa’s identity, the Daily Maverick reports.
Initially, the suspects attempted to force Kwankwa to withdraw money from an ATM at a petrol station but abandoned this plan because of the presence of security personnel.
Instead, they kept Kwankwa captive before releasing him in Lingelethu West, Khayelitsha.
