Mdletshe ditch NFP over ANC-DA-IFP coalition

Canaan Mdletshe has resigned as the secretary-general of the National Freedom Party.

This follows the pronouncement by the party that it is forming a coalition government with the ANC and the DA in KwaZulu-Natal.

Mdletshe tendered his resignation with immediate effect and said his conscience would not allow him to be part of a grouping that is hellbent at clinging into power against the will and aspirations of the people.

Despite having only one seat, the NFP emerged as the kingmakers in KZN after the May 29 elections.

“Through their actions, the voters in KZN rejected the ANC, reducing it into a mere shadow in the broader political spectrum in the province.

“I, therefore cannot watch when thirst for power clouds judgement and takes centre stage at the expense of morality.

“I am not a sellout and I will never betray South Africans merely because I’ve been promised positions,” he remarked.

Since becoming actively involved in politics, Mdletshe highlighted that he has never undermined the people, their wishes and aspirations – and got no intentions of starting now.

Mdletshe privileged to serve under the late KaMagwaza-Msibi

He added; “I have been loyal to the organization and its founding principles. As I leave the NFP, I’m proud of my track record which speaks volumes.”

Mdletshe served the party and the late president Zanele KaMagwaza-Msibi well. In 2021, he campaigned extensively for the NFP, which led to a significant increase in the number of councillors.

The combination of the ANC, DA, IFP and NFP give that coalition 41 seats in the provincial legislature.

A coalition government has become necessary after last month’s polls failed to produce an outright winner in the province.

The MK Party on its own has 37 seats.
