Tributes continue to pour in for the late former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and struggle stalwart, Aziz Pahad, who died age 82.

Originally from Schweizer-Reneke in North West, the anti-apartheid activist, died on Wednesday.

Aziz’s passing follows that of his brother and former Minister in the Presidency, Essop, in July 2023.

President Cyril Ramaphosa extended his condolences to the Pahad family who have in short succession lost two distinguished members who dedicated their lives to serving the nation.

“Aziz was a consummate diplomat not only in the service of our country but in support of causes for freedom and justice elsewhere in the world, notably advocating the plight of the Palestinian people.

“Endearing of disposition and fierce of principle, he represented our nation with passion and clarity and played a significant role in educating the nation of our early democracy about international relations and South Africa’s role, place and vision in a world which itself undergoing change at that time,” Ramaphosa said.

Aziz unwavering commitment to the struggle against apartheid carried the flame of hope for millions who yearned for a democratic South Africa.

He played a prominent role in South Africa’s efforts to stop a US-led attack on Iraq; and for strongly putting across the country’s rejection of Israel’s building of the apartheid wall in Palestine.

“Pahad was a dedicated comrade and a fighter till the end. He believed in justice and treated his domestic helpers no different from that of a king. He was always willing to help and gave his last to any good cause,” said Ganief Hendricks, Al Jama-ah’s member of parliament.

ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba said Pahad’s contribution to the liberation struggle of the country is one of the beacons of hope for the spirit of nation-building the country needs.

He added; “Few can forget the stealth and strategic mind he displayed during his time in exile and as the head of our diplomatic missions.

“Pahad displayed the character and foresight our foreign affairs need at a time when South Africa’s global reputation needs a boost.

“It is no secret that we have as a nation declined in our capacity to positively influence the global agenda for which his ilk was so celebrated.”

Mashaba stated that South Africa’s democratic project was all the richer under his guidance and participation.

Spokesperson for Activist, and Citizens Forum, Dennis Bloem said this is indeed a huge loss to his family and the entire country.

“It is a sad day for South Africa. Some of us had the opportunity and were fortunate to have worked with Comrade Aziz after the unbanning of political parties when he came back from exile and worked with him in Parliament.

“We can never forget his enormous contribution in the Liberation Struggle. He loved his people and the country, a dedicated servant of the people, a good-hearted patriot, full of laughter and jokes.”

Meanwhile, President Ramaphosa has declared that the late Aziz will be honoured with a Special Official Funeral Category 2, on Saturday.

“The South African Police Service will provide ceremonial elements during the funeral service, which will commence at West Park Cemetery in Johannesburg at 10h00.

“President Ramaphosa has directed that flags be flown at half-mast around the country until tomorrow evening,” the presidency said.
