According to Popcru, the trio succumbed to injuries leading to their demise in a devastating head-on collision caused by reckless driving.

It is reported that the two officers, who were driving a state car travelling towards Vaal Marina, came head-on with a minibus driver who was on the oncoming lane, leading to both vehicles colliding and bursting into flames.

The union’s provincial secretary, Lerata Motsiri, said this incident underscores the ongoing challenges on South Africa’s roads.

He stated that this is where irresponsible behaviour continues to claim innocent lives, including those of individuals dedicated to serving and protecting our communities.

“It is particularly heartbreaking that such negligence has robbed us of colleagues who have given their lives to public service.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased. Their loss is not only felt within their immediate circles but resonates deeply across the POPCRU family and the broader law enforcement community,” he remarked.

Motsiri further called for law enforcement authorities to conduct a swift and thorough investigation into this tragic incident and ensure that the responsible parties are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.

He continued; “We reiterate the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and harsher penalties for reckless driving, which continues to endanger lives on our roads. This includes implementing measures to prevent drunk driving, speeding, and other negligent behaviours.

“We are committed to providing support to the families of our fallen members during this difficult time, ensuring that they receive the necessary assistance, both emotionally and materially.

“This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for collective action to prioritize road safety. Reckless driving is not merely a violation of traffic laws—it is a reckless disregard for human life.

“We appeal to all road users to act responsibly, adhere to traffic regulations, and prioritize the safety of everyone on the road. Together, we can prevent further loss of life and create a culture of accountability on South Africa’s roads.”
