RISE Mzansi National Chairperson Vuyiswa Ramokgopa says the Joburg water crisis is a problem that must be solved at the polls.
Water Scarcity Turns Basic Need into Luxury for Jo’burg Citizens.

Ramokgopa highlighted that the situation is worsening, with Midrand reservoirs critically low.

According to Ramokgopa, Johannesburg is facing a severe water crisis, with ten of twelve reservoirs critically low and two outlets closed.

“This situation is deemed a leadership failure, not just a technical one, as the city lacks solutions.

“Johannesburg residents diligently pay municipal bills yet are now forced to queue for water, treating this basic human need as a luxury, indicating the city’s failure in its obligations.

“The Johannesburg water crisis starkly illustrates the collapse of the current administration and city council due to their incompetence. Lack of planning, urgency, and accountability, replaced only by excuses, defines the situation,” she expressed.

Ramokgopa stated that Johannesburg cannot function without water.

She continued, “Communities cannot survive on empty promises; businesses cannot operate without water; schools, clinics and other public service centres become nodes for a public health outbreak.

“What we need now is a responsive government led by young, agile, and decisive leaders who understand that service delivery is not optional.

Residents hold key to solving water crisis

“That change will only come if residents push out the current city establishment at the polls in the upcoming local government elections.”

Ramokgopa outlined Johannesburg’s water strategy, emphasising ethical leadership, effective oversight, improved governance, sufficient treatment capacity, infrastructure maintenance, and prosecuting corruption as keys to responsible water management.

“Johannesburg residents must unite for consistent water access, a functioning city, and caring new leadership,” she concluded.
