The debate around popular contest for Song of the year has again been marred by controversy as the country bade farewell to 2023 to usher in a new season.

While most radio stations such as Metro FM, 702, Radio 2000, Motsweding and Ligwalagwala FM went for an AmaPiano track, Mzansi’s number one airwave Ukhozi FM opted for a traditional genre, Maskandi.
iPlan by Dlala Thukzin (real name Thuthuka Zindlovu) featuring Zaba and Sykes which has been a hit on the dance floors topped the charts as music fans geared for 2024; it was not surprising that it got the nod but Khuzani Mpungose featuring Luve Dubazane Umjolo Lowo had an ace up his sleeve.

While fanatics dubbed the Ukhozi FM, which broadcasts mainly in isiZulu language with listenership hovering around 7.9million as tribalist, the polls however did the talking.
According to Ukhozi FM, Umjolo Lowo amassed 993 667 votes, followed by Mthandeni SK featuring Lwah Ndlunkulu with a track titled Paris with 746 338 votes and iPlan salvaged 90 422 votes at the third spot.
Prior to New Year’s Eve, the SA Broadcasting Corporation released a statement affirming support to its various radio stations format in deciding the crossover song of the year.
“The SABC would like to reiterate its commitment in assuring the public and relevant stakeholders that the song of the year campaigns on all the participating radio stations are subject to stringent criteria setting processes and sound measures have been put in place for the counting of the votes and announcement of the winners,” Acting Group Executive – Corporate Affairs and Marketing, Mmoni Seapolelo stated.

Ukhozi FM always surprised Mzansi with song of the year results, in 2021 relatively unknown DJ Hlo (real name Hlosiwe Mthalane) whose song Isibani which most people had not heard before was voted the Record of the Year.
