Unruly, illegal Zimbabweans arrested enroute to South Africa

Three unruly and illegal Zimbabweans nationals travelling into South Africa by bus on the Ben Schoeman Highway on Sunday have been arrested by Tshwane metro police.

Law enforcement officials conducting road policing caught sight of a bus coming from the Fountains area going to the direction of Centurion.

According to Isaac Mahamba, TMP spokesperson, the bus was carrying too many passengers some were crowded behind the front windscreen next to the driver.

“Officers instructed the bus driver to stop, they approached the bus and asked for the driver’s identification documents.

“The driver produced a Zimbabwean driving license and passport, cross-border permit which was found to be fake.

“Passengers on the bus instructed the driver to drive away from the scene that’s when the officer gave chase and instructed the driver to stop and he refused,” he explained.

Mahamba stated that the officers called for backup and whilst they were in pursuit one truck driver who saw what was happening tried to block the bus and it stopped.

He continued; “Zimbabweans nationals from the bus came out of the bus assaulting the driver of the truck. The driver of the bus then drove straight to the TMP vehicle and bumped into it.

“With the assistance of backup members, the driver and two Zimbabwean nationals were arrested for assault, recklessness and negligence driving, illegal immigration, damage to property and obstruction of justice. The other occupants on the bus ran in different directions while the bus was impounded.”

Mahamba added that the three suspects will appear in court soon, investigations to the incident continues to apprehend the escaped passengers.

He further said this serves as a warning to other illegal immigrants who enter the border illegally and reiterated that the TMP will not condone any unruly behaviour and will arrest anyone who break the law.
