According to NYUM, this reckless decision will devastate the most vulnerable – the unemployed, with an already crippling 60% youth unemployment rate.

Lindokuhle Yende, a leader at NYUM, stated that rising transport costs will severely hinder job searches, exacerbating the ongoing crisis of social reproduction.

“This situation threatens to push many families into poverty, further worsening the plight of over 23 million already impoverished South Africans, who face increasing levels of destitution and despair.

“Businesses will suffer, jobs will be lost, and our people will be forced to the fringes of society – unable to afford basic necessities, let alone participate in the economy.

“We will not stand by while our future is taken from us. The NYUM demands justice and decisive action, not empty promises. Let us not allow our citizens to be rendered passive victims of economic hardship,” he remarked.

Yende cautioned that the recent increase in fuel prices acts as a ticking time bomb, suggesting that if immediate and effective measures are not implemented, the implications could be severe.

The forecast includes escalating poverty and inequality levels, leading to potential social unrest and instability. Furthermore, there is a looming threat of a lost generation of young individuals who may find themselves deprived of essential opportunities as a result of these economic pressures.

He expressed a strong demand for immediate relief targeted at low-income households, emphasizing the need for various support measures.

This includes advocating for enhanced support for public transport systems, the implementation of job creation initiatives, and the establishment of measures aimed at reducing fuel costs.

These actions are portrayed as essential to alleviate the financial burdens faced by economically disadvantaged families.

Yende added, “We, the youth, will not be the collateral damage of a system that prioritizes profits over people. We demand a better future, and we won’t settle for anything less. The revolution will be led by the unheard, the unrepresented, and the unapologetic.”
