Investigations are underway after armed robbers pounced on Transport minister Sindisiwe Chikunga and her bodyguards on the N3 in Ekurhuleni.
The department confirmed the hijacking incident which took place between Vosloorus and Heidelberg in the early hours of Monday morning when the minister was en route to Pretoria.
“The tyres of the Minister’s car were punctured by spikes, bringing the car to a stop enabling the criminals to rob the occupants of valuables.
“Both the minister and her protection team emerged from this incident unharmed and safe,” Collen Msibi, the departmental spokesperson said.
He added; “Chikunga remains committed to fulfilling her government responsibilities and is deeply grateful for the overwhelming support she has received from her fellow government colleagues and the people of South Africa.”
National police spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said a case of armed robbers was being investigated.
“Members involved are receiving necessary support and counselling from the SAPS Employee Health and Wellness unit,” Mathe said.

She said that the two VIP guards were “relieved from their duties and the minister has been provided with other resources until such time that the current are fit and proper to return to their posts”.
She added: “Steps are underway to determine what transpired as far as VIP protection protocols are concerned and an officer has since been appointed to conduct a determination investigation”.
