A 40-year-old male was arrested for dealing in and being in possession of dagga weighing 564 grams with an estimated street value of R1 000.00.
During the Operation Vala Umgodi raid, ninety-four bankies or zip lock plastics containing dried leaves of dagga were found at his residential place and seized.
Free State police spokesperson Lt Col Thabo Covane confirmed that a case of dealing in dagga was opened at Welkom Police Station and more arrests were effected during the continuing actions in the province.
He said the Combat team swept through Rheeder Park, Phomolong near Welkom visiting drug posts and houses identified as targets for illegal mining activities.
“Contraband goods; foodstuffs such as soya mince and biltong were seized from the 23-year-old contract worker at Kopanang Mine.
“Further information led to the search of the suspect’s living unit where cash received as payment for smuggling food down the shaft earlier was confiscated.

“A case of conspiracy to commit crime with additional charges of money laundering and assisting illegal miners was opened at Vierfontein Police Station,” he explained.
Covane added that the suspects will appear before court soon.
