Two suspects arrested in De Deur for dealing in unwrought gold

The pair aged 35 and 39 was arrested during a joint operation conducted by the Hawks based in Vaal Rand, De Deur police, Forensic Science Laboratory and other stakeholders.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Noloyiso Rwexana, the team executed a search warrant at a plot that is situated on the corner Walker road and First road, Walker Fruit Farms, De Deur.

“Our members interviewed the owner of the plot who indicated that he is renting out a portion of his plot to two men who allegedly use it to bring sand to make tombstones.

“The two suspects were not found at the plot, two men that were found are their employees.

Rwexana stated that a small amounts of carbon, gold bearing material about 200 tons, empty cyanide drums and caustic bags were confiscated.

Police investigation is continuing.

Meanwhile, three suspects appeared before the Bethlehem Magistrate Court facing charges of theft of copper cable.

According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring the security was at the Eureka Railway line when they spotted the three suspects removing infrastructure.

“They were all arrested and handed over to police at Bethlehem police station. The security found and seized a rusty spade, chisel and undercoax a meter of copper cable.

“The trio was remanded in custody until Wednesday, October 25, for further investigations and formal bail application.”
