The Department of Basic Education has confirmed that Monday, 15 June, has been designated as a special school holiday in terms of the approved 2026 school calendar.

This year, 2026, marks the 50th anniversary of the pivotal events of 16 June 1976, a landmark date in South Africa’s history.
These events, which significantly shaped the country’s socio-political landscape, are annually commemorated through Youth Day, observed specifically on 16 June.
This observance serves not only as a remembrance of the past but also as a reflection on the struggles faced by the youth during that time, highlighting their role in the fight against oppression and advocating for equal rights and education.
The events of 1976 are a testament to the courage and resilience of the youth, inspiring ongoing discussions about social justice and empowerment in South Africa today.
Special school holiday
On Tuesday, June 16, a nationally recognized public holiday will occur, leading to the closure of schools across the country on both Monday, June 15, and Tuesday, June 16, as mandated by the department.
Acting director of communication and research, Terence Khala, announced the resumption of teaching and learning activities, scheduled to begin on Wednesday, 17 June.
This statement signifies the institution’s commitment to reinstating educational operations following any previous disruptions.
