The Electoral Commission is embarking on a nationwide Schools Democracy Programme (SDP) to enhance civic and democratic education for young South Africans across various provinces.
The program collaborates with the department of basic education to promote active citizenship by educating learners on democracy, the electoral process, and participatory governance.
The commission emphasized the importance of this exposure to cultivate a civic-minded culture within the educational framework.
Through interactive learning and mock elections, the SDP enhances students’ understanding of electoral systems and promotes critical thinking about the significance of democracy.
The chief electoral officer, Sy Mamabolo, described the initiative as essential for preparing learners to engage meaningfully in South Africa’s democracy.
Civic education
“The Schools’ Democracy Programme is a cornerstone of our long-term vision to strengthen South Africa’s democracy.
“By investing in civic education at the school level, we are nurturing a generation that understands not only the value of the vote but also their role in shaping the future of the country,” said Mamabolo.
He emphasized that the national rollout is timely as the electoral commission boosts its civic and voter education initiatives ahead of the forthcoming municipal elections.
