Taking place from 18 to 24 November under the theme: “Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future” the campaign urges the public to use antibiotics responsibly to help fight antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and safeguard lifesaving medicines.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), AMR happens when bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites no longer respond to treatments making infections harder to cure and increasing the risk of severe illness and death.

In a statement, the department said this growing health threat affects humans, animals, plants and the environment.

“The misuse and overuse of antibiotics are the leading drivers of resistance. To help prevent AMR, the public is urged to only take antibiotics prescribed by a qualified health professional.

Avoid demanding antibiotics

“Follow the instructions exactly and complete the full course of treatment. Never share or use leftover antibiotics and avoid demanding antibiotics for viral infections like colds or flu.

“Everyone has a role to play. Good hygiene, routine vaccinations and safe sanitation can reduce the spread of infection and the need for antibiotics.

“Additionally, protecting the environment such as avoiding water pollution helps limit the emergence of resistant pathogens. AMR is a global crisis but with the right actions the effectiveness of treatments for future generations can be preserved,” the statement read.
