Sport, Arts and Culture Minister, Gayton McKenzie, has expressed his sorrow over the death of celebrated South African musician Pops Mohamed, who passed away on Thursday, 4 December.

Pops Mohamed, originally named Ismail Mohamed-Jan, was born on December 10, 1949, in Benoni, Gauteng, and he has established a significant musical legacy that has endured for over fifty years.

The Minister described his death as a significant loss to the nation’s musical heritage. Pops Mohamed, known as the “Minister of Music,” was a highly skilled multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, and cultural custodian.

He exhibited exceptional proficiency in various instruments, including the kora, mbira, African mouth bow, didgeridoo, guitar, and keyboard, successfully blending traditional African music with jazz, kwela, soul, world music, and contemporary styles.

Pops Mohamed has made notable contributions to the preservation and advancement of African musical heritage throughout his career. He has traveled extensively, performing and conducting workshops in South Africa, Europe, Asia, and other regions, thereby introducing indigenous African music to a global audience.

In 2023, he received the South African Music Awards Lifetime Achievement Award, acknowledging his significant contributions to the music industry in South Africa and his pioneering efforts in the preservation and promotion of both traditional and contemporary African music.

Earlier, in 2010, he was honored with the Arts & Culture Trust Lifetime Achievement Award, which recognized his significant and enduring influence on the arts, culture, and heritage of South Africa.

Pops Mohamed achieved a significant milestone with his album Ancestral Healing, which earned the 3rd annual FNB SAMA Award for Best Traditional Performance. This accolade played a pivotal role in bringing traditional African music to the attention of global jazz and world music audiences.

Minister McKenzie expressed that the death of Pops Mohamed represents a significant loss not only to the music community but also to the essence of South African arts and culture.

Minister McKenzie extended his heartfelt condolences to the Mohamed-Jan family, to the many artists he mentored, and to all South Africans who mourn this monumental loss.
