The Gauteng traffic police chief inspector Samuel Mashaba has been placed on precautionary suspension pending the conclusion of a formal disciplinary process.

The office of the premier said the decision follows testimony provided by Mashaba before the Madlanga Commission.

During his testimony, Mashaba admitted to actions that could potentially breach the public service code of conduct, as well as various departmental policies and laws that govern public servants.

According to Elijah Mhlanga, the provincial government spokesperson, these admissions indicate serious concerns regarding his conduct while in office.

Outlining these breaches, Mhlanga mentioned the admissions include allegations relating to the misuse of official powers entrusted to him as a law enforcement officer.

“The misuse of departmental tools of trade and state resources; the acceptance of compensation from a member of the public in circumstances that raise concerns regarding conflicts of interest and ethical conduct.

“The Gauteng Provincial Government takes these allegations seriously and is committed to ensuring the highest standards of integrity, accountability, and professionalism within all its institutions.

Traffic chief to return tools of trade

Mhlanga stated that the precautionary suspension is effective immediately. He emphasized the importance of procedural fairness and labor law, indicating that Mashaba must return all tools of trade, including phones, firearms, and laptops.

Additionally, he (Mashaba) is prohibited from entering government buildings or engaging with staff members to prevent any interference with ongoing investigations.

He added, “The Gauteng Provincial Government remains committed to building an ethical, capable, and professional public service that serves residents with honesty and integrity.

“Any conduct that undermines public trust in government institutions will be dealt with decisively and in accordance with the law.”
