City of Ekurhuleni on a mission to regain revenue

The operation Siyacima Manje – Namhlanje is in full swing in the Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg.

This comes after the City of Ekurhuleni activated the operation in an attempt to retrieve billions owes to the municipality.

Siyacima Manje – Namhlanje (loosely translated “We are switching off now, today”) will furthermore target major debtors, companies and government departments in the region that default on payments.

Each Friday, officials from the city including Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department [EMPD], various government departments and other stakeholders will embark on an operation from the morning.

Finance MMC, Nkululeko Dunga who is spearheading the process, said they will switch off electricity and water for those who don’t want to pay but can afford.

Recently, they have targeted numerous companies and some of them don’t pay their rates and taxes.

“They are owing millions of hands. Other companies stopped paying their bills in the beginning of covid 19,” Dunga briefly said.

In the latest operation, it was established that numerous companies in Wadeville and Germiston are defaulting but use electricity and water.

“They bypass electricity and water. In Germiston, there is a company that bought a huge electric cable to bypass the current to our transformer.

“They did the same with our water meter. This makes it hard for us to render service delivery to residents,” he explained.

Dunga added by saying they have delapidated infrastructures.

He continued; “We will do whatever it takes to regain the revenue from those who owes the municipality.

“If people don’t pay, they make it so difficult for us to build houses, fix the roads or render other services. People must pay so that we will able to take money back to people.”
