The Foundation announced that the former cabinet minister will take up her position on 1 October.

The announcement follows the retirement of Professor Njabulo Ndebele, who has served on the Board for 25 years and as Chair for over a decade.

The former DIRCO minister will become the third person to hold the position since Nelson Mandela established the foundation in 1999 when Professor Jakes Gerwel became the founding incumbent.

She worked closely with Madiba during South Africa’s first democratic administration in the 1990s and is one of South Africa’s longest-serving members of Parliament.

According to TimesLIVE, Pandor will work with a new CEO, Prof Mbongiseni Buthelezi, who will also start at the beginning of the month.

The executive director of the Public Affairs Research Institute succeeds Sello Hatang, who was dismissed after an internal investigation into his personal conduct in the workplace.

Pandor said she is honoured and delighted to be entrusted with this role as mobilising Madiba’s legacy is more important than ever in a world facing complex challenges.

Nelson Mandela Foundation doing critical work

“In a world facing so many complex challenges, mobilising Madiba’s legacy becomes more important than ever.

“I believe that the Nelson Mandela Foundation is doing critically important work in the social justice space, and I am looking forward to making a meaningful contribution,” she added.

The ceremonial transition will take place during the 22nd Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture on September 28, featuring Nobel Prize winner Abdulrazak Gurnah.

The theme for this year’s lecture is “Realising our Shared Humanity.”

The ANC congratulated Pandor and said they recognise her dedication to advancing Madiba’s legacy of social justice and equality.
