In 2025, French multinational Soufflet Malt SA invested approximately R2 billion in a new malt production facility near Heineken Beverages SA’s Sedibeng brewery in the Midvaal local municipality (MLM).

This investment signifies a lasting pledge to bolster the nation’s brewing and agro-processing sectors.

It specifically aims to improve the local barley supply chain and provide crucial support to farming communities throughout the province.

The facility, set to open in 2027, will produce 100,000 tonnes of malt annually, creating 50–60 direct jobs and 300 indirect jobs, procuring 125,000 tonnes.

Heineken Soufflet Malt South Africa contacted the MLM to propose hosting their manufacturing plant there, according to Ofentse Madzebetala, DA Gauteng spokesperson for economic development.

Madzebetala said Midvaal mayor Peter Texeria welcomed this initiative and gave the go-ahead for the plant.

He added, “This was not done through Premier Lesufi’s office but was a project initiated by the private sector. Furthermore, this project is not part of the Vaal Special Economic Zone (SEZ).”

Lesufi urged to acknowledge

The DA in Gauteng applauded the opening of a new plant in Midvaal, emphasising the significant job creation it promises for local residents and the surrounding communities.

Madzebetala asserts that private sector investment proves good governance boosts local economies.

He urged Premier Lesufi to acknowledge this, emphasising that sound governance encourages investment across the province, rather than claiming unearned credit.

“A DA-led Gauteng government plans to implement the successful governance model of Midvaal in struggling municipalities like Emfuleni and Sedibeng.

“This aims to create an environment that attracts private investment, addressing the urgent need for job creation, especially for Gauteng’s youth,” remarked Madzebetala.
