The party announced on Wednesday, that Kaunda who served as transport, community and liaison MEC until his tenure commenced as mayor in 2019 will be redeployed to the national council of provinces.

As we usher in a new era following the national and provincial elections, we are identifying key areas that require urgent focus, said ANC provincial secretary Bheki Mtolo.

”We strongly believe that, with his experience, Cde Mxolisi Kaunda has an important role to play in the NCOP.

“We extend our appreciation to him for his dedication during the most difficult period such as the ravaging floods, the outbreak of COVID-19 and many other challenges,” he expressed.

Mtolo stated that as they start a new chapter, they extended a hand of cooperation to all the people of eThekwini across all political lines as they pull together behind a common goal of making the city a livable place.

He said; “Leaders of different political parties are encouraged to play an oversight role to ensure that there is clean governance and speed in the delivery of services.

“Our view as the ANC is that real politics involving all political parties in the council should be about efforts to meet the needs of the people.

“Collectively, we must ensure that the new change post-election is felt positively by residents in informal settlements, townships, suburbs, business offices, industrial areas, and all corners of the city.”

Mtolo said post consultation with relevant structures and leaders they will announce Kaunda’s replacement.

Meanwhile, ActionSA in KZN said it is not surprised as the development highlights the dynamics of the Democratic Alliance and ANC coalition agreement which is dressed up as GNU.

According to the party provincial chairperson Zwakele Mncwango, the DA needed reasons to donate their votes to help president Ramaphosa and the ANC to continue running the country down.

He further added that the decision by the ANC is a mere stunt aimed at nursing the DA’s ego.

“By using Kaunda as a sacrificial lamb they are paving a way for a closer relationship between the two parties.

“However, as ActionSA, we firmly believe that merely removing Kaunda will not address the core issues plaguing eThekwini.

eThekwini to be monitored

“The fundamental problem lies with the ANC’s governance, and it is the ANC’s removal that will lead to meaningful change in the municipality,” he remarked.

Mncwango assured eThekwini ratepayers that his party will continue to be the unofficial opposition in the metro and that they will monitor the marriage between the two parties.

He continued; “This union has been in the making for a long time, and its official formation was inevitable. Ratepayers should not be alarmed by the DA’s recent actions.

“Instead, they should understand that ActionSA remains steadfast in our commitment to fight  their rights.”
