Advocate Matthew Chaskalson has been appointed the new chief evidence leader of the Madlanga commission of inquiry.

He’s taking over from advocate Terry Motau, who held the role for less than two weeks and reportedly requested to leave the Commission.
The Madlanga Commission, led by Acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, which is investigating allegations of criminality, political interference, and corruption within South Africa’s criminal justice system, commenced its work earlier this month.
In a statement issued, Jeremy Michaels, the commission’s’ spokesperson stated that they will not be discussing this matter any further as it can only serve to distract it from the task at hand.
“This commission’s priority is to ensure that it is squarely focused on the job as outlined in the terms of reference, which is to conduct an inquiry and make ‘actionable recommendations’ regarding the gravely serious allegations that South Africa’s law enforcement agencies have been infiltrated and unduly influenced by criminal syndicates and drug cartels,” he said.
Michaels further highlighted that the work of the Commission is critically important for the rule of law in South Africa and they will continue to vigorously pursue their mission in the interests of the country.
Meanwhile, Activists and Citizens Forum spokesperson, Dennis Bloem, expressed sadness at the shocking news of the passing of Ambassador Nathi Mthethwa.
“Some of us had the privilege of working with Ambassador Mthethwa in Parliament. He was a good-hearted human being, soft spoken but firm in his beliefs,” he added.
Mthethwa implicated before Madlanga Commission
Mthethwa served as Chief Whip for the ANC for a few years and was later appointed as a Cabinet Minister in different portfolios. At the time of his death, he was an Ambassador for South Africa in France.
Bloem said; “It is very unfortunate and sad that Ambassador Mthethwa must leave this earth with a cloud hanging over his head and did not have the opportunity to put his side of the story to the Madlanga Commission.”

Mthethwa was mentioned by General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi in his testimony before the Madlanga Commission.
“General Mkhwanazi alleged that Nathi Mthethwa, during his time as Minister, he was also one of the Ministers who interfered in operational matters at the police, especially when it came to the former Head of the Police Crime Intelligence Richard Mdluli.
“We hope that those who are still alive and know the truth about the Mdluli matter will come forward and clear the air,” he expressed.
