ActionSA says it has written to Joburg Mayor Dada Morero demanding the suspension of the Group Corporate Governance and Shared Services, MMC Sithembiso Zungu.

This follows revelations from the Hawks that he unduly benefited from City Dev, a company involved in a housing development project in Lehae.
ActionSA Johannesburg Caucus Leader, Marcel Coutriers said according to the allegations, MMC Zungu collected money under the guise of a ‘protection fee,’ a tactic commonly associated with scammers.
He stated that crucially, they believe this matter corroborates information already in their possession, including evidence of bank transactions between MMC Zungu and City Dev Construction, facilitated through an individual named Mr Stegman.
“It is evident that MMC Zungu received funds from Mr. Stegman, deposited into his personal bank account via City Dev Construction. ActionSA strongly believes that MMC Zungu has a case to answer and cannot continue to occupy his position while facing these allegations.
Letter to City of Joburg’s Mayor
“We have therefore written to Mayor Dada Morero, demanding the immediate suspension of MMC Zungu from his duties, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
“Mayor Morero has previously set a precedent by removing Kabelo Gwamanda from his role as MMC for Community Development when he faced similar criminal allegations.
“Given the current circumstances, it is imperative that MMC Zungu be held accountable and step aside to protect the integrity of the investigation,” he explained.
Coutriers further emphasised that they will not stand by while those intent on entrenching corruption act without accountability.

He continued; “We are proud that it was the anti-corruption work led by Herman Mashaba during his tenure as Mayor that resulted in over 6 000 cases, involving transactions worth R35 billion, being investigated. We will ensure this work continues, despite ongoing efforts to reverse this legacy.”
