At least 1,031 suspects were arrested during a high-density operation, referred to as “Operation Shanela,” which was conducted over the past weekend.

The arrests were made for various crimes, highlighting a significant law enforcement effort during this operation.
The initiative focuses on increasing police visibility and strengthening state authority within these areas.
The weekly operation aims to significantly lower crime rates across all five districts of the province—Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, West Rand, and Sedibeng.
Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi reported that a total of 307 arrests were made through visible policing efforts.
“This included 103 illegal immigrants, 54 individuals for dealing or possession of drugs, 72 for driving under the influence of alcohol, and 32 for selling liquor without a license, among other offenses.
“While the detectives in the province arrested 724 wanted suspects for serious and violent crimes.”
Gauteng provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni commended the collaborative efforts of multidisciplinary teams involved in “Operation Shanela.”

He emphasized that when law enforcement collaborates with the community, significant achievements in combating crime are possible.
Mthombeni asserted a zero-tolerance policy towards criminality in Gauteng, reiterating the commitment to continue the fight against crime.
