A serious multi-vehicle accident took place on the M1 North at the Crown Interchange on Monday afternoon.

The incident involved two heavy-duty trucks and one private motor vehicle, leading to significant disruptions and concerns regarding road safety in the area.
According to the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla, preliminary reports indicated that the private vehicle became wedged between the two trucks during the collision.
“Two individuals from the private vehicle, the driver and a passenger, sustained serious injuries. Both have been stabilised and transported to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.
“The exact cause of the accident is not yet determined and remains under active investigation. A case of reckless and negligent driving will be opened for further investigation.
“The scene is partially active, resulting in significant congestion across the Johannesburg freeway network,” he explained.
Delays on the M1 North
Fihla stated that only two lanes are currently open on the M1 North toward the Crown Interchange.
He added, “Motorists should expect severe delays on the M1 North, M1 South, and M2 West. Traffic on the M1 North is being diverted at the M2 toward Crown. Vehicles are then being re-diverted at M2 Chain back toward the M1 North.”
Fihla recommended alternative routes for the peak evening commute to mitigate extreme delays.

“For northbound travelers, Booysens Road is advised, while westbound commuters should consider utilizing local roads that pass through Selby and Fordsburg to effectively bypass the interchange.
“We urge all motorists to exercise extreme patience and caution. Please do not “rubberneck” when passing the scene, as this is contributing to the heavy delays on the M1 South,” he concluded.
