South African international Thapelo Maseko has officially joined Danish club FC Copenhagen on a four-year contract from Mamelodi Sundowns for a transfer fee of approximately €1.5 million.

Maseko, known for his left-footed attacking capabilities and noted for his explosive pace and direct playing style, has drawn praise from FC Copenhagen’s coach Bo Svensson. He will wear the number 12 jersey, further enhancing the club’s offensive strategies.
The 22-year-old player moves to Europe, arriving on the back of impressive performances in South African football.
He has become a key figure for Mamelodi Sundowns and recently contributed to the South Africa national team by scoring the winning goal against South Korea in this summer’s World Cup.
Mamelodi Sundowns expressed their gratitude to Maseko, particularly recognising his contributions during their triumph in the 2026 CAF Champions League.
Maseko revealed that he was motivated to make the move after hearing inspiring stories about FC Copenhagen and its loyal fans from former player Sibusiso Zuma.
This transfer is part of a growing trend of South African football talents transitioning to European clubs this summer.
Speaking about the move, Maseko expressed that this opportunity is a dream come true, stating his determination to make a significant impact from the very first day on the training pitch.
He emphasised his pride in the agreement and noted that F.C. Copenhagen holds a special place for him.
“They are a club that is highly recognised internationally, and Zuma has told me so many great things about the club, the fans, and the city. I am looking forward to experiencing it all myself.

“I am truly honoured to get this opportunity, and it fills me with hunger and ambition. I have come here to make a difference and leave my mark on the club.
“I have big ambitions for the club and on a personal level. I come here to win, and I am very excited to get out on the pitch and give everything I’ve got,” Maseko expressed.
Maseko’s arrival
Director of Football Kristjaan Speakman expressed enthusiasm about Thapelo Maseko’s arrival, stating that the team is focused on building a balanced squad with varied profiles and that Maseko represents an exciting addition to their roster.
“He’s comfortable to play on both sides of the pitch and likes to attack space with and without the ball. His game is progressing and recent exposure at the international level has shown his ability to play on the biggest stage.
“He’s been patient and shown a strong desire to join F.C. Copenhagen; it was a competitive process to acquire him, and we are very happy to welcome him into our group,” said Speakman.
F.C. Copenhagen head coach Bo Svensson said they are looking forward to working with Maseko and have high expectations for the South African.

He described Maseko as an explosive, dynamic talent with outstanding capabilities in direct, one-on-one scenarios.
“His pace and ability to challenge his direct opponent will make him a constant threat in behind, but he can also use his left foot to assist teammates when cutting inside.”
“There are naturally still elements to refine, but Thapelo’s potential is high, and he always works tirelessly for the team, so we are really looking forward to working with him on a daily basis,” Svensson remarked.
