Whilst two persons, a bodyguard and Rand Water’s executive were shot and killed.

The incident took place in the south of Johannesburg where the water utility held an event to donate school shoes and uniforms to the value of R470 000 to 1 670 learners from eight schools from ward 122, City of Johannesburg.

In a statement issued, Rand Water confirmed the tragic incident which occurred at Zakariyya Park community centre.

“As an organisation, we are shocked and devastated by the tragic passing of our treasured colleague, however our policy prohibits the organisation from releasing the employee’s name without the family consent,” said spokesperson Makenosi Maroo.

Maroo stated that the water utility does not have further details but they are working closely with investigators as they assess and investigate the shooting incident.

Meanwhile, the council speaker, Margaret Arnolds assured the residents that Zungu is currently alive and receiving medical attention.

Arnolds said further details on the incident will be communicated at a later stage once available.

She further urged residents to refrain from sharing unconfirmed reports.

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi reportedly told News24 that several suspects entered the hall and opened fire before fleeing.

“Two people were declared dead on the scene while three others were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds.

“The motive of the shooting is unknown at this stage,” Nevhuhulwi added.
