Twelve undocumented persons and five drivers have been arrested for drunken driving during Operation Shanela in Vaal, south of Johannesburg.

Police also seized one vehicle for engine tampering during a roadblock in Sedibeng district which was joined by other law enforcement agencies such as the Gauteng traffic and crime prevention wardens, Emfuleni traffic and bylaws enforcement officers, as well as security companies as part of BACSA Eyes and Ears Initiative.

Gauteng police commissioner, lieutenant general Elias Mawela, led the multidisciplinary team through Bophelong township for liquor compliance inspections where three liquor outlets were closed for noncompliance with the liquor act.

Meanwhile, two suspects aged 40 and 42 were arrested in a sting operation by the Hawks’ serious corruption investigation on Friday in Ga-Rankuwa, Pretoria for allegedly enticing a Hawks investigator with R10 000, to secure the bail release of one of the suspect’s brother.

According to the police, one of the suspects has a brother who has been in custody since 2022, following his arrest by the Rustenburg based serious organised crime investigation for alleged manufacturing of drugs.

The suspects were arrested moments after allegedly handing over R10 000 to the investigating officer of the drug case. 

The money and the vehicle they used were seized for further investigation.
