Mosimane conferred with a doctorate

One of South Africa’s most decorated football coaches, Pitso Mosimane was bestowed with an honorary doctorate by the University of Johannesburg (UJ).

The conferment ceremony took place in front of dignitaries such as Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, Premier Soccer League chairman Dr Irvin Khoza, Football Administrator Molefi Oliphant and UJ vice-chancellor Prof Letlhokwa Mpedi.

According to the institution, the significance of this honorary doctorate lies in its recognition of an individual’s extraordinary achievements beyond the academic realm.

“UJ’s decision to bestow this honour upon Mosimane highlights his influential role in elevating South African football and his dedication to nurturing young talent.

“The prestigious honour recognized Mosimane’s outstanding contributions to sports, his exemplary leadership, and his unwavering commitment to social upliftment,” the institution said.

Jingles as he is affectionately known won multiple titles as a PSL coach at Supersport United.

His most significant success was at Mamelodi Sundowns, where he won five league titles, including the much coveted CAF Champions League.

He also went on to do wonders in a foreign land where he won various cups at Al Ahly including Egypt cup and two CAF Champions league titles.

“I am deeply honoured and grateful for this recognition. I have been, and always will be, a student of our beautiful game. Football is a powerful tool for change, it is a source of hope, and a platform to educate and inspire the next generation.

“This honorary doctorate is not just a personal achievement, but a result of the hard work and dedication of all the players, coaches, teams, and supporters who have been part of this incredible journey,” he stated.

Mosimane highlighted that education and sports are two pillars that can profoundly impact the society.

He added; “My dream is to have a school of my own, where education and high-performance football development can co-exist so that the future generations can also pursue their dreams with passion and perseverance, just as I have.

“Through this honorary doctorate I hope to inspire these young people to also recognise the importance of continuous education”.

Soccer legend Jomo Sono said its a big day for football to see one of the ex-players and coach to be honoured while he is alive.

“I’ve been the one who always speaking about this that we’re only honoured when we are dead and you can’t hear anything.

“I think it’s a great day for Pitso today and South African football as it motivates other players and coaches to work harder if they see something like this happening to a person like Pitso and being honoured,” he remarked.
