A department of health’s head of department (HOD) in North West has handed himself over to the Hawks authorities over irregular awarding of a tender.

This emanates from alleged construction of Brits district hospital while he was still at the department of public works in 2008.
Obakeng Mongale, 52, was granted R50 000 bail.
While the matter is not related to the department of health in the province and that he is innocent until proven guilty by the court, the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) said it is extremely concerned.
“The fact that a head of department of a critical service department is implicated in a questionable tendering process which is an area of serious concern.
“Because of the nature of its business, the department of health is often involved in procurement irregularities, so much that a person who is the head of the department should be beyond reproach as means to lead by example.

“Having someone who is implicated in a procurement process as head of a department of health may make him a seriously compromised leader of the most labour-intensive department,” provincial secretary Reuben Molete stated.
He further urged the department to act swiftly and decisively on the matter.
