The event occurred on a Tuesday at approximately 11:00 am, involving a 20-year-old driver in a white Toyota Etios who received a ride request to pick up a passenger on Maine Street.

The apprehension of the suspects follows the incident, highlighting ongoing concerns about safety for e-hailing service providers.

Upon arrival, a female suspect signaled the driver and entered the front passenger seat, instructing him to wait for her brothers. Subsequently, two male suspects joined them, as reported by Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi.

“Shortly after the second male entered the vehicle, one suspect engaged the vehicle’s handbrake while the group forcibly robbed the driver of an undisclosed amount of cash, his driver’s licence, identity document and bank cards.

Armed robbery charges

“During the incident, a fourth suspect standing outside the vehicle fired a gunshot and demanded the driver’s mobile phone. The suspects subsequently fled the scene without taking the phone,” she said.
