The testimony of the Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, was just a waste of the Parliamentary Ad-Hoc Committee’s time. It was very clear that he came to the committee to justify and defend his unilateral decision to disband the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).

Minister Mchunu’s interpretation of the Country’s Constitution on his power is completely wrong. His advisers misled him.

The disbandment of the PKTT is an operational matter that fell squarely under the duties of the National Commissioner. Therefore, this was political interference.

Minister Mchunu claims that he briefed President Cyril Ramaphosa about his decision to disband the PKTT and that the President agreed with him. If this is true, then the President is also guilty of agreeing with unconstitutional decisions.

During his testimony Minister Mchunu released a bombshell by telling the committee that he instructed his Chief of Staff, Mr Cedric Nkabinde, to secretly record phone calls with General Mkhwanazi.

Minister Mchunu said the reason for this instruction is because his Chief of staff told him that General Mkwanazi is very angry.

Mchunu not above the law

Gen Mkhwanazi said that this letter of the disbandment of the PKTT must be withdrawn. Failure to do so, there will be a fightback. The Minister said that General Mkhwanazi was threatening to dig into the past of the Minister.

Minister Mchunu claims he felt intimidated and threatened by what Cedric Nkabinde told him.

This unlawful instruction by Minister Mchunu is disgusting and must be condemned in the strongest terms possible. All are equal before the law. Nobody is above the law.

Activists and Citizens Forum is looking forward to the questions from the Members of Parliament to Minister Mchunu. We hope that they will rise to the occasion.
