The operation involved collaboration among various city departments to effectively manage the situation and restore compliance with local building codes.

According to JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla, the recent action taken by the department reaffirms its commitment to uphold the rule of law regarding land use and urban management.

He emphasized the importance of adhering to legal regulations in the context of urban development, land utilization, and ensuring the safety of residents.

“As part of our ongoing efforts to tackle the rising land invasions across the City of Johannesburg, the department has introduced strict measures to address this growing challenge.

“During the operation, 50 illegal structures were demolished, and the materials were removed without facing any resistance.

“This operation comes in the wake of a violent incident that occurred at the same location the previous week, wherein officers were aggressively attacked by a mob while carrying out their official duties.

“The previous week’s events heightened the urgency and scrutiny surrounding the demolition of illegal structures, underscoring the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in such operations,” he added.

Fihla showered the officers involved in that incident with praises for their tactical retreat, citing great restraint and professionalism.

He continued, “If officers had retaliated against such aggression, it could have resulted in catastrophic loss of life. Instead, their withdrawal prevented a major disaster.

“In today’s operation, the Public Order Policing (POP) unit played a crucial role with its enhanced presence.

Prevention of illegal structures’ re-erection

“This strategic deployment allowed the Department to adhere to proper enforcement procedures, thereby ensuring the safety of both personnel involved in the operation and the surrounding community.

“The involvement of the POP unit signifies a proactive approach to maintaining public order while minimizing risk.”

Fihla stated that JMPD will not be deterred by acts of lawlessness, further highlighting that it is unacceptable for officers to be shot at while lawfully enforcing city bylaws.

“We urge the community to cooperate with law enforcement and resolve land and housing issues through legal means rather than resorting to violence.

“We will continue to monitor Ennerdale Extension 11 and other problem areas to prevent the re-erection of illegal structures,” he concluded.
