Gospel music veteran Solomon “Solly Moholo” Molokoane has passed away following an illness.

The 65-year-old spent several days in the hospital after falling ill while in a neighbouring country for the launch of his upcoming album, Wubani O zo Pepeza.

The self-proclaimed National Gospel Mukhukhu King also made headlines for venturing into amapiano and performing at baby showers, night-clubs and was a regular feature at political party gatherings. 

He will be remembered for a number of top chart hits such as Tsoha Jonase Nice Time Ya Bolaya, Ke Latlhile Bokinza, Motlhang Ke Kolobetswa ‘Die Poppe Sal Dans’, Damsey Wa Legangele and Ka Letsatsi La Bofelo to name a few.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the family confirmed the passing of the legendary sensation.

“It is with great sadness that we are informing you on behalf of the Molokoane family, that our beloved legend “Solly Moholo” has sadly passed on.

“He passed on 2nd October 2024 whilst in hospital. Solly Moholo was hospitalized after falling in following his pre album launch tour in Botswana.

“He will be sorely missed. May his laughter continue to echo the walls of heaven. Let us remember him fondly for the healing music he gave us over the years.

“At this time, the family would like to request that they be given privacy and time to mourn the passing of Ntate Solly Moholo and prepare for his burial,” the statement read.

The family further stated that details of his memorial and funeral will be shared in the coming days.

Solly Moholo remembered

“I was very young and clueless about the music industry. My mom handed me over to Malome Solly Moholo, he trained me and guided me throughout.

“It’s so painful to say Rest In Peace Malome Solly. Until we meet again on the other side of the world,” Winnie Mashaba remarked.

African National Congress (ANC) secretary general Fikile Mbalula said the ANC is deeply saddened by the passing of legendary gospel singer, Solly Moholo, a true icon in the South African music industry.

“His powerful voice, passion for spreading the word of God, and dedication to uplifting the spirits of many through his music will forever be remembered.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and fans during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace, and may his legacy live on in the music and joy he brought to the world,” he expressed.

“The Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and the nation at large on the passing of the Veteran Gospel artist Solomon “Solly” Moholo .

“Your contribution to the music industry touched many hearts. You will forever be remembered,” the party wrote.
