Power has been restored to some residents within the Johannesburg CBD who were affected by the explosion, City Power confirmed.

This comes after an underground gas explosion tore through Lilian Ngoyi (formerly Bree) street and caused massive infrastructure damage to parts of the city centre resulting in one person killed, and 41 others injured following gas explosion during rush hour.
The power supplier spokesperson Isaac Mangena says at least fifty percent of the resident load feeding from Bree substation were energized earlier this morning.

“The team worked hard overnight after the clearance was given by the Emergency Services, Disaster Management, and Labour. The gas levels were also cleared at one percent on the risk matrix.
“We also expect to restore the feeder cables under the collapsed road structure along Bree street after they tested clear during the initial testing this morning,” he said.
Mangena urged customers who power is still off by this evening to log a call so that technicians can attend to it.
