ANCYL urges full disclosure of GCRA report amid governance concerns

The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) in Gauteng has called on Premier Panyaza Lesufi to release the final investigation report into the Gauteng City Region Academy (GCRA).

This demand arises amid renewed scrutiny concerning governance, accountability, and youth employment issues, which are currently in the public eye.

This follows allegations highlighted during eNCA’s Checkpoint investigation into GCRA and the Nasi Ispani Solar Technician Programme, as well as the subsequent statement issued by the Office of the Premier.

Mpume Sangweni, the ANCYL provincial secretary, asserts that the organization proactively raised concerns prior to any media coverage.

“In March 2025, we formally approached the Public Protector and submitted evidence of serious allegations relating to the governance and administration of the GCRA.

“We intervened with one objective in mind: to protect public resources and opportunities meant for unemployed young people,” he stated.

Sangweni noted that the suspension of the GCRA CEO is appreciated, but it follows persistent pressure from the ANCYL, which has called for accountability from the Gauteng Provincial Government.

He added, “More importantly, the suspended CEO has reportedly been under investigation since 2022. The question therefore remains: why has it taken years for decisive action to be taken? Delayed accountability is accountability denied.

“We call on Premier Lesufi to immediately release the final investigation report into the GCRA so that the people of Gauteng know the full extent of the findings and the actions that will follow.”

ANCYL slams Acting CEO appointment

According to Sangweni, the ANCYL is equally disturbed by the appointment of the Acting CEO of the GCRA and categorically rejects this appointment.

“We believe the Premier is playing marbles with the future of young people in Gauteng by appointing an individual who has failed
a lifestyle audit sanctioned by him.

“If the Premier is committed to clean governance, he must urgently reverse this appointment and appoint a credible, competent and ethical young person capable of restoring public confidence in this important institution.

“The ANCYL remains firmly supportive of the broader Nasi Ispani initiative, which has created thousands of employment and skills development opportunities for young people across Gauteng.

“It is precisely because of the programme’s importance that it must be protected from maladministration, political patronage and poor governance,” he remarked.
