Tributes have continued to pour in following the death of former Zambia international striker Justin Shonga.

Former Orlando Pirates and Zambia forward Justin Shonga died after short illness.

The 27-year-old prolific marksman died in Lusaka following a short illness, the Football Association of Zambia confirmed. 

Shonga who played for Nkwazi FC before joining South Africa’s Orlando Pirates represented Chipolopolo 33 times.

“Zambia Police Deputy Spokesperson Dan Mwale has confirmed in an interview with the FAZ Media Team. Mwale said Shonga died at Sikanze Military Hospital after a short illness,” a statement read.

Shonga spent three years at Orlando Pirates after being signed from Zambian Super League side Nkwazi FC in 2017.

He made 70 appearances, scoring 16 goals and providing 16 assists for the Buccaneers before joining Tshakuma Tsha Madzivhandila in October 2020 where he lasted for three months. 

Shonga spent time at Cape Town City, Ismaily SC in Egypt prior to his return to the PSL in January 2022 where he joined Sekhukhune United but parted ways six months later. 

Tributes pour in for Justin Shonga

According to TimesLIVE, he played for FC Gagra in Georgia in 2023-2024 and was on the books of Najran Sports Club in Saudi Arabia’s second tier, who he signed for in January, at the time of his death.

Following the news of his demise, Pirates took to social media and posted: “@orlandopirates is devastated to learn of the passing of our former player, Justin Shonga. Our thoughts go to his family and friends.”

“Sekhukhune United Football Club is saddened by the passing of our former player Juston Shonga. Our sincere condolences to his Family and Friends,” Babina Noko expressed.

Cape Town City joined in and wrote; “We are saddened to hear about the passing of former Citizen, Justin Shonga. Our thought go out ot his friends and family.”
