As one of the country’s top stars, she not only performs for thousands and releases multi-platinum albums, but also writes and produces her material.

Zonke’s first break came in 2003 when Joburg engineer Leon Erasmus asked her to record demo vocals on a cultural exchange project with German jazz-pop producer York.

Trying to break into the music industry upon arrival in Johannesburg in the late ‘90s, the Gqeberha-raised songstress had no idea what journey she was embarking on.

“My father, Viva Dikana, was a musician, and I’d always said I wanted to be an artist,” she recalled.

Viva taught her most of what she knows about music, from the theory of composition all the way through to being a successful business person in the industry.

He is honoured in her classic track, “Viva the Legend” from her Ina Ethe album, which fans can look forward to seeing her perform next week.

When asked how she viewed the music scene today, the star said she embraced the new artists and new sounds, but they did not influence her musical direction.

The show will start at 19:00 and the organisers promise to be a bigger, bolder, and more beautiful concert.

“I can release an album after four years, and I love it because it shows that I have carved out my path, and people are always waiting for me and my sound. And they are all waiting for me to do that old-school soul the way I have been doing it.”

Zonke’s perseverance

Described as a unique musical force, a raging success, and an instinctive improvising singer-songwriter, Zonke’s story is one of perseverance, staying true to one’s vision, knowing oneself, and building on the criticism of others.

She writes and produces her material and boasts multiple platinum-selling albums and a list of awards and nominations too long to stipulate in detail.

Dikana has written and co-written hits for dance artist Winnie Khumalo, kwaito muso Thebe Mogane, the late R&B star Tsakani Mhinga (famously known as TK), and also worked with legends such as Bongo Maffin and Oskido.

Zonke has gone through many tests in life, such as when she lost her sister Lulu Dikana in December 2014, and in 2013, Zonke’s sister Busisiswe.

Tickets are available at Webtickets from R450.
