Manhunt for cold blooded killer underway following shooting in a tavern

A manhunt is underway for suspect responsible for the fatal shooting of two people and injury to at least another three persons on Saturday evening in a tavern in Maqhinebeni (formerly Mthatha), Eastern Cape.

It is alleged that an unknown gunman entered the drinking spot just before midnight and started shooting at patrons.

Provincial commissioner, lieutenant general Nomthetheleli Mene said at this stage police managed to trace five victims that were shot.

“One person died on the scene while another died in hospital. The three injured were transported by private transport to hospital. The deceased, a male (40) and a female, is yet to be identified,” she added.

Lt Gen Mene has urged the community’s assistance in tracing the suspect as soon as possible.

“The community plays a pivotal role in assisting police on the whereabouts of criminals. These criminals are living among the communities and we need them to be our ‘eyes and ears’ in order to arrest perpetrators such as this and to bring them to justice.

“Innocent people are being targeted and we cannot allow such a cold hearted criminal to roam our streets and cause more harm to law abiding citizens. Therefore, he must be arrested in the shortest time possible,” Lt Gen Mene concluded.

A case of murder and attempted murder is under investigation.
